What is pediatric medicine?
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Pediatrics is by definition a specialty of the practice of medicine that deals with the health and wellness needs of children from birth to adolescence. This includes monitoring the physical, social, and mental health of pediatric patients. Since children are different from adults in the ways they grow and develop psychologically and metabolically, regularly scheduled preventive medical care, properly scheduled vaccinations, and continually monitoring the child’s level of maturation for any abnormalities are all essential.
At Anwan Wellness Medical Center, our team of integrative medicine specialists includes pediatricians who have received specialized training in pediatrics. This includes training in preventive medicine and in the diagnosis and treatment of many pediatric disease conditions. Our holistic approach will focus on your child’s overall health as well as on any acute health issues which might develop to help ensure a healthy and long life as they progress into adulthood.
How often should I bring my child in for a wellness exam?
Your child’s wellness exams will be conducted in an integrative and holistic manner based on their age according to the accepted guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Initially, a child should be seen in a follow-up visit 3 to 5 days after birth. Then, follow-up visits should be scheduled at 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, and 15 months.
After this, child wellness visits should be scheduled at 18 months, 2 years, 2 and 1/2 years, and then yearly up to the age of 18 or 21 years old.
Well-child visits include immunizations and nutrition and child safety counseling and will track your child at every visit to see if they are meeting all growth and developmental milestones.
In order to keep your pediatrician updated on your child’s status, you are encouraged to bring a list of any questions or concerns about your child with you to all of your child’s well-child visits.
Does pediatric care include sick visits?
Since children can experience many illnesses, regular pediatric care from our experienced pediatric team includes acute pediatric care if your child becomes ill.
If your child is under 1 year of age and experiences elevated temperatures, excessive sleepiness, or irritability, a cough, diarrhea, or persistent vomiting, you should make an immediate appointment with one of our team’s pediatric specialists.
If your child is over 1 year of age, you should contact our office for an appointment if they have upper respiratory symptoms for more than 1 week, a persistent earache, persistent diarrhea, vomiting, or a severe rash.
