GYNECOLOGY Why is gynecology care important?
Our gynecologic team conducts routine pelvic exams in order to assess your gynecologic health. We also conduct on-site testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and both breast cancer and cervical cancer.
What happens during a pelvic exam?
First, your health care team member will assist you to lie down comfortably on the examination table. During this procedure you will be properly covered and draped at all times. Your examining physician will begin by examining your external genitalia and conducting an internal pelvic exam. Then your physician will examine your internal vaginal area by using a speculum which is put into the vaginal canal.
Pap Smears
Pap smears are conducted by inserting a cotton swab into the opening of your cervix to collect cervical cells. This sample is then sent to the laboratory where it is studied to determine if there are any pre-cancerous or cancerous cells present.
At your gynecologic appointment you will also have the opportunity to discuss any questions you may have about specific gynecologic issues or procedures.
What do abnormal Pap smear results mean?
If you do have an abnormal pap smear it does not mean that you have developed cervical cancer. Different conditions such as STDs can also result in abnormal Pap smear results.
